TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database

The TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database is a comprehensive resource for researchers, policymakers, and other individuals interested in examining growth over time in students’ mathematics and science achievement and related educational contexts. The database includes internationally comparable, student-level longitudinal data from nine TIMSS 2023 countries, linking fourth- and eighth-grade student achievement results from 2023 with a second data collection in 2024 for the same students in fifth and ninth grades. In addition to achievement outcomes, the database contains process data from the computer-based assessments and extensive contextual information collected from students, their teachers, and their school principals at both time points.

The longitudinal database also incorporates system-level information provided by TIMSS National Research Coordinators, including data on education policies, curriculum structures, and transitions between grades. By following the same cohort of students across consecutive school years, the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database enables analyses of learning growth, changes in educational experiences, and differences in achievement trajectories across countries and student subgroups.

The public-use version of the database is available to download below, along with the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal User Guide for the International Database, which provides detailed documentation to support users in navigating the database and conducting basic analyses. Researchers can analyze the data using the IEA IDB Analyzer, a free application developed by IEA Hamburg to facilitate the analysis of large-scale assessment data.

Users can request access to restricted-use TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Event Log Data Files through the IEA Study Data Repository. These files contain timestamped records from the digital assessment platform about students’ navigation behaviors, item response history, and other screen-level interactions with achievement test content. The files can be merged with the International Database files, available below, to analyze students’ test-taking behaviors and their potential associations with growth and other contextual factors. Documentation accompanying the data files provides detailed information about the types of events recorded in the data to facilitate their use.
