Students Value Environmental Preservation
Students in the fourth and eighth grades who strongly value preservation of the environment tend to have a higher average achievement in environmental knowledge than those who place less value on environmental preservation. The items in the TIMSS 2023 Students Value Environmental Preservation scale (Exhibit 7.2.1) asked students to indicate their level of agreement with five statements (for fourth-grade students) or six statements (for eighth-grade students) about the value of preserving the environment. Based on their combined reports, students were classified into three groups: “very strongly value,” “strongly value,” and “somewhat value” environmental preservation. For the fourth grade and eighth grade, respectively, Exhibits 7.2.2 and 7.2.3 report the context scale results in relation to students’ achievement on the environmental knowledge subscale.
More than half of fourth-grade students strongly value environmental preservation (Exhibit 7.2.2). On average across countries, 56 percent of students “very strongly” valued environmental preservation, 38 percent “strongly” valued environmental preservation, and only six percent “somewhat” valued environmental preservation. There was a positive relationship between valuing environmental preservation and average environmental knowledge achievement, with students who “strongly” valued environmental preservation having an average achievement score 55 points higher than students who “somewhat” valued environmental preservation (510 vs. 455).
Internationally, a little less than half of eighth-grade students strongly value environmental preservation (Exhibit 7.2.3). On average across countries, 48 percent of students “very strongly” valued environmental preservation, 41 percent “strongly” valued environmental preservation, and 12 percent “somewhat” valued environmental preservation. There was a positive relationship between valuing environmental preservation and average environmental knowledge achievement. Students who “strongly” valued environmental preservation had an average achievement 37 points higher than students who “somewhat” valued environmental preservation (488 vs. 451).

This TIMSS context questionnaire scale was established in 2023 based on the combined response distribution of countries that participated in TIMSS 2023. To provide a point of reference for country comparisons, the scale centerpoint of 10 was located at the mean of the combined distribution. The units of the scale were chosen so that 2 scale score points corresponded to the standard deviation of the distribution.
( ) Standard errors appear in parentheses. Because of rounding some results may appear inconsistent.
An “r” indicates data are available for at least 70% but less than 85% of the students.
A dash (-) indicates comparable data not available because average achievement could not be accurately estimated.
A tilde (~) indicates insufficient data to report result.
