Teachers Majored in Mathematics and Mathematics Education

The TIMSS 2023 Teacher Questionnaire collected information about eighth-grade students’ mathematics teachers’ majors during post-secondary education. These are reported by four categories: major in mathematics and mathematics education, major in mathematics but no major in mathematics education, major in mathematics education but no major in mathematics, and all other majors. The small percentage of students whose mathematics teachers have no formal education beyond upper-secondary is also reported. Details about this index can be found in Supplement 3 of the TIMSS 2023 User Guide for the International Database. These percentages must be considered in the context of mathematics teacher preparation within countries. More details can be found in the TIMSS 2023 Encyclopedia.

Internationally, a large majority of eighth-grade students (90%) had mathematics teachers who majored in mathematics, mathematics education, or both (Exhibit 5.1.9). On average, about three quarters (77%) of students had mathematics teachers who had a major in mathematics and mathematics education (42%), or who had a major in mathematics but not mathematics education (35%). Thirteen percent of students were taught by mathematics teachers who majored in mathematics education and 9 percent of students were taught by mathematics teachers with other majors. A very small percentage of students (1%) had mathematics teachers with no formal education beyond upper-secondary.

Across countries, average mathematics achievement was similar for students who had teachers with different majors. Students with teachers who majored in mathematics and mathematics education and those with teachers who majored in mathematics education only had an average mathematics achievement of 479 and 483, respectively. Students with teachers who majored in mathematics only and students with teachers who had other majors had an average mathematics achievement of 474. The very small percentage of students whose teachers had no formal education beyond upper-secondary had much lower average mathematics achievement (412).
