Students Value Science

Eighth-grade students who value science have higher average science achievement than those who do not value science. The items in the TIMSS 2023 Students Value Science scale (Exhibit 6.3.7) asked students to indicate their level of agreement with eight statements about the value of science in their lives. Students were grouped into three categories based on their responses: “strongly value,” “somewhat value,” and “do not value” science.

On average across countries, 36 percent of students reported that they “strongly value” science, 36 percent reported that they “somewhat value” science, and 27 percent reported that they “do not value” science (Exhibit 6.3.8). There was a positive relationship between students’ self-reports of valuing science and average achievement, with students who reported that they “strongly value” science having an average achievement score 32 points higher than students who reported that they “do not value” science (492 vs. 460). Average achievement for students who reported that they “somewhat value” science was in between (475).

This TIMSS context questionnaire scale was established in 2011 based on the combined response distribution of countries that participated in TIMSS 2011. To provide a point of reference for country comparisons, the scale centerpoint of 10 was located at the mean of the combined distribution. The units of the scale were chosen so that 2 scale score points corresponded to the standard deviation of the distribution.

( ) Standard errors appear in parentheses. Because of rounding some results may appear inconsistent.

An “r” indicates data are available for at least 70% but less than 85% of the students.
