Student Use of Internet for Schoolwork
Eighth-grade students reported using the internet for a variety of different school tasks. The TIMSS 2023 Student Questionnaire asked eighth-grade students to report how frequently they used the internet for different types of schoolwork (Exhibit 6.4.6). Students indicated if they used the internet for these activities “at least once a week,” “once or twice a month,” or “never or almost never.”
On average internationally, the most common uses of the internet for schoolwork were accessing textbooks or other source materials and accessing assignments posted by teachers (Exhibit 6.4.7). A little over half of students (53%) reported using the internet for each of these tasks “at least once a week.” Other uses of the internet for schoolwork were less common internationally. Forty-three percent of students reported using the internet to collaborate with classmates or to find mathematics information, articles, or tutorials “at least once a week.” Forty percent of students reported using the internet “at least once a week” to ask the teacher questions, and 28 percent reported at least weekly usage to access learning games or activities related to mathematics or science.
